Rainfall deciles for the past 3 months in Inland East Australia show extremely wet conditions (some highest on record), which is typically associated with La Nina conditions. If the dynamics of the climate system (i.e. increased convection in Western tropical pacific) suggest that a La Nina is underway - does this point to the limitations of tracking ENSO using an index in isolation such as the SOI or Nino 3.4 SSTAs - and if so, is there a way to look at the system more holistically?
