This color-coded map shows sea surface temperatures as of August 31, 2023. Sea surface temperatures at lower latitudes are balmy (pale orange), unsurprising for Northern Hemisphere hurricane season. Sea surface temperatures in the Arctic Ocean, however, hover near the freezing point of saltwater, which is slightly lower than the freezing point of freshwater.
